John Liu was named Interim Vice Chancellor and Provost, effective Jan. 6, 2020. Liu had served as Vice President for Research since Sept. 2017. He came to Syracuse from Auburn University, where he served as Associate Provost and Associate Vice President for Research. He previously served as Associate Dean for Research in the College of Agriculture and Assistant Director of the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station, and as distinguished Alumni Professor in the School of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences. Liu is an accomplished administrator, with demonstrated success in the areas of growing the university’s research enterprise, enhancing scholarship, promoting interdisciplinary collaborations, supporting research infrastructure, supporting graduate programs, enhancing faculty competitiveness through cluster hires and targeted hires, and developing international collaborations.
Liu has provided leadership for various national and international functions, including serving as the coordinator for Aquaculture under the USDA National Animal Genome Program NRSP-8, Administrative Advisor for NRSP-7, SERA 17, and multi-state project S-1042, and as a member of the ESCOP Science and Technology Committee of APLU. He has served on various boards such as the Advisory Board of Oceans and Human Health of the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Advisory Board for the National Laboratory of Qingdao Marine Science and Technology of China, and as a trustee member for Guangdong Ocean University.
Liu has served on numerous national grant panels for federal agencies such as NSF, NIH, USDA, NOAA, and for international funding agencies such as Genome Canada, EU Framework programs, Natural Science Foundation of China, Israel Natural Science Foundation, Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, Singapore R&D Foundation, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, South Africa’s National Research Foundation, and CRB-Animal Network of France, among many others. He also served as panel manager for programs of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). He has served as Editor-in-Chief for Marine Biotechnology, associate editor for BMC Genomics, associate editor for BMC Genetics, academic editor for PLoS One, and on the editorial boards of Aquaculture, Aquaculture Reviews, Animal Biotechnology, Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering, Journal of Fishery Sciences of China, and Chinese Journal of Oceanology and Limnology.
Liu is an international leader and a world authority in the area of aquaculture genomics and bioinformatics. He has trained over 100 Ph.D. students and postdocs, and served on over 100 graduate committees. During his lengthy academic career, he has obtained more than 80 grants totaling more than $47 million and has published over 300 papers with citations of more than 14,000. Liu has published four books: Aquaculture Genome Technologies, Next Generation Sequencing & Whole Genome Selection in Aquaculture, Functional Genomics in Aquaculture, and Bioinformatics in Aquaculture. He has served as organizer and session chair for numerous national and international conferences, and provided over 150 keynote and invited lectures in various countries in the world. He was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2007 and a Fellow of the World Aquaculture Society in 2017. He is currently serving on the Steering Committee of USDA in developing the Blueprint for Animal Genomics and Genetics 2018-2027.
