INITIATING SERVICES
Syracuse University is an academic community which values diversity and seeks to promote meaningful access to educational opportunity for all of its students. The Office Of Disability Services (ODS) facilitates equal access to programs and activities, coordinates auxiliary aids and services, provides access to adaptive technology, and when necessary advocates on behalf of students with members of the campus community. In addition, all students attending Syracuse University may access general academic support services including writing support, math support and peer tutoring.
Self-Identify as a Student with Disability to ODS
If you are a student with a disability and wish to request accommodations, it is important that you contact the Office of Disability Services. Students with disabilities may choose to self-disclose at any time. However, in order to ensure sufficient time to arrange for and provide auxiliary aids and services, we encourage students to contact the Office of Disability Services as early as possible.
Provide Documentation of a Disability
Documentation of a student’s disability should be from an appropriate qualified professional and should validate the need for services based on an individual’s current level of functioning in the educational setting. Medical information should also include the impact of any medication on the student’s ability to meet the demands in the post-secondary environment. These guidelines may be helpful to both you and the professional evaluator when deciding what documentation to share with ODS. Students should obtain a copy of their disability documentation from the original source and retain a copy for their personal records. Receipt of documentation will be acknowledged by ODS if contact information is provided. If you have recently sent your documentation to ODS and have not received acknowledgement, you may wish to contact the Office at 315-443-4498 to confirm its receipt.
Meet with ODS Counselor
Upon receipt of submitted disability-related documentation, the ODS Director will initially review the documentation and an ODS Counselor will continue to work with the student throughout their academic career. It is important that students requesting accommodations contact the ODS to verify whether or not documentation has been received and to obtain the name of the ODS Counselor with whom they will be working. If contact information has been provided, receipt of documentation by ODS will be acknowledged.
Through an interactive process involving the student, the ODS Counselor and when necessary, representatives from other University departments, accommodations and services that would support a student while attending Syracuse University will be identified and discussed. ODS Counselors and Service Coordinators are available to assist students in self-monitoring the effectiveness of accommodations, provide support and/or assistance in identifying available resources on campus, as well as to discuss any specific needs a student may have.
Office of Disability Services Staff are available and welcomes parents, students, faculty, and staff to contact us regarding any questions or concerns they may have.
CONFIDENTIALITY/DISCLOSURE
Disability documentation submitted to the Office of Disability Services (ODS) is considered confidential information and does not become part of a student’s permanent record. Disability information is housed in the (ODS) unless the student submits the documentation to another campus department. Students should obtain a copy of their disability documentation from the original source and retain a copy for their personal records. Disability documentation is normally maintained for ten years after the last recorded date of enrollment and then it is destroyed. Disability related information will be treated in a confidential manner in accordance with federal and state regulations.
SERVICES/ACCOMMODATIONS
Overview
The Office of Disability Services (ODS) assists students with disabilities in receiving accommodations and services to ensure access to campus programs and activities. Generally speaking, an accommodation is an individualized aid, service, change, or alteration, which is provided to ensure that individual students with disabilities have architectural and programmatic access to the University. Accommodations are determined on a case by case basis depending upon documented need and the course, activity, or program in which the student is participating. Accommodations are not intended to alter the fundamental requirements or essential elements of a program, cause an undue administrative or financial burden, pose a direct threat to the health or safety of others, and do not include aids or equipment for personal use. ODS staff welcome the opportunity to share information and provide support and assistance on an ongoing basis.
Accommodations and services may include, but are not limited to, ensuring physical access to campus programs and activities, testing and classroom accommodations (reader, scribe, note-taking services, etc.), alternate format of printed materials (e.g., enlarged text, Braille, audio or electronic format, etc.), and/or communication access (e.g., interpreter services, captioning, transcription, etc.) and consultation with faculty regarding universal instructional design, course modifications, and student evaluation.
Students who have initiated a request for accommodation may receive an Accommodation Authorization Letter. ODS Counselors will provide each student with an Orientation to the ODS process which may include information such as procedures for accessing accommodations, information regarding academic support, and information regarding adaptive technology at SU. Students may also be asked to meet with an ODS Service Coordinator regarding specific accommodations and/or services that will be needed (e.g., alternate format of printed materials, note-taking assistance, exam assistance provided through ODS, etc.). Prior to, or at the beginning of each semester, students should make an appointment with their ODS Counselor and ODS Service Coordinator to identify and discuss accommodations and services that may be needed in the upcoming semester.
ODS Counselors and Service Coordinators are available to assist students in self-monitoring the effectiveness of accommodations, provide support and/or assistance in identifying available resources on campus, as well as to discuss any specific needs a student may have.
Office of Disability Services Staff are available and welcomes students, faculty, and staff to contact us regarding any questions or concerns they may have.
Counseling
Office of Disability Services
The Office of Disability Services (ODS) assists students by providing counseling on disability related issues, questions and concerns. Students are invited to contact their ODS Counselor for assistance.
Exam Accommodation(s)
The provision of exam accommodations is an interactive process involving the student, the Office of Disability Services (ODS) Counselor, Faculty, and when necessary, the ODS Service Coordinator for Exam Administration. Exam accommodations may include a reader, scribe, adaptive technology, quiet testing location, time extension, or other necessary adjustments. Students in need of accommodation(s) for exams will receive an Accommodation Authorization Letter from their ODS Counselor and will be advised to discuss their specific needs with their faculty. Many faculty provide accommodations for exams, however, if an exam is to be administered in the Office of Disability Services, the student and Faculty member will be asked to complete an ODS Exam Administration Request Form. Because exam administration through ODS requires advance planning, it is important that students meet with the ODS Service Coordinator for Exam Administration as early in the semester as possible. Students who plan to use this service will be instructed by the Service Coordinator on the procedures for taking an exam in the Office of Disability Services.
For information regarding exam accommodations needed while studying abroad, or questions pertaining to entrance/certifying exams (e.g., LSAT, GMAT, GRE, etc.), or any other specific situation, students should contact their Counselor in the Office of Disability Services.
For more information:
Deb Calo, Service Coordinator for Exam Administration
E-mail: ddcalo@syr.edu
Phone: 315-443-5024.
Note-taking Services
The provision of note-taking accommodations is an interactive process involving the student, the Office of Disability Services (ODS) Counselor, Service Coordinator for Note-taking Assistance, and faculty. Many professors at SU provide copies of their lecture notes and power point presentations on-line. When necessary, the ODS Service Coordinator will work together with a student and the instructor to make arrangements for class notes. Students in need of this accommodation must contact the ODS Service Coordinator, submit a Note-taking Request Form, and become oriented to the procedures for accessing the requested notes. Students will need to bring a copy of their course syllabus and class schedule to this meeting. Because this service requires advanced planning, it is important that students begin the process for a request as early as possible. The ODS Service Coordinator for Note-taking Services will provide each student with an Orientation to the procedures for accessing this accommodation, answer any ongoing questions, and provide support as needed.
For more information:
Deb Calo, Service Coordinator for Note-taking Services
E-mail: ddcalo@syr.edu
Phone: 315-443-5024
Alternate Format of Printed Materials
The provision of alternate format of printed text is an interactive process involving the student, the Office of Disability Services (ODS) Counselor, the ODS Service Coordinator for Alternate Format, and when necessary members from other University departments. Students with disabilities, like all University students, are expected to purchase their own textbooks and course materials. Requests for alternate format of printed text may include Braille, electronic text, audio taped text, enlarged text, etc. Because the production of alternate format of printed materials requires advanced planning and extensive time, students in need of this accommodation should contact the ODS Service Coordinator for Alternate Format as early as possible to discuss specific needs. While the Office will make every effort to provide a student with their preference of an alternate format of printed text, there may be times when a student may need to accept text in a format that ensures access even though it is not the student’s preferred format. The ODS Service Coordinator for Alternate Format will instruct each student on the procedures for accessing this accommodation.

Services for Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
There is a broad spectrum of services and accommodations that may be provided for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Services and accommodations are provided in consultation with the student and may include, but are not limited to, interpreter services, transliteration, and/or Computer Aided Realtime Translation (CART).
The provision of these services is an interactive process involving the student, the ODS Counselor, and service providers located in the Syracuse community. The resource pool of providers for some services is extremely limited in the greater Syracuse area. Therefore, students are encouraged to submit a request for these services to their ODS Counselor.
Building/Classroom Accommodations
Syracuse University is committed to ensuring architectural and programmatic access for individuals with disabilities. The Office of Disability Services (ODS) works closely with University departments and staff to ensure that the classes in which a student is enrolled are located in buildings and classrooms that are accessible. Accommodations may include, but are not limited to, moving a class or meeting to another location, providing accessible furniture, providing necessary technology, and/or providing other needed adjustments.
Assistive technology and Assistive Listening Systems are permanently installed in many of the campus auditoriums and/or large lecture classrooms. Portable Assistive Listening Systems are also available for loan through the Office of Disability Services.
The Syracuse University Safety Department works to provide a safe campus environment. Students who anticipate a need for assistance during an emergency evacuation should follow the guidelines outlined by the Safety Department. If a student with a disability anticipates that they may have difficulty in evacuating a campus building, they should request that the ODS arrange to have a copy of their class location and times be put on file with the Department of Public Safety.

Unless a service animal is at risk, poses a hazard or risk to specific campus facilities (including research or activities undertaken in such facilities), or is a threat to the safety or physical well being of others, individuals with disabilities are permitted to use service animals on the University campus.
A request to allow a service animal to reside in University housing must be processed through the Office of Disability Services. A request must include documentation of the individual’s disability (according to ODS Documentation Guidelines), disability-related need for the service animal and evidence that the service animal meets state and local ordinances for licensing, vaccinations and other health-related requirements. The Office of Disability Services will work in collaboration with the Office of Housing for final approval. For additional information, please see the University Policy on Service Animals. (Link)
