Retirement

2.63 retirement

Syracuse University's retirement plan, carried with the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association (TIAA/CREF), 730 Third Avenue, New York, New York 10017, applies to faculty members as follows:

  • To participate, members of the faculty must be at least 21 years of age and have one year of eligible service. Eligible service is defined as holding a full-time or regular part-time appointment and completion of 1,000 hours of service in one year at Syracuse University, or immediately preceding Syracuse University employment, such service at a four-year college or university which confers a baccalaureate degree.
  • Vesting will be immediate upon participation.
  • Syracuse University contributes an amount equal to 11 percent of eligible earnings to faculty members' TIAA-CREF Retirement Annuities. No individual contributions are required. Eligible earnings consist of regular compensation excluding overtime and overload.
  • Voluntary tax-deferred contributions are allowed up to federal maximum levels.
  • All retirement contracts written in accordance with this plan are between the participants and TIAA, and are the participant's property. Complete details of the plan can be found in the Plan Document kept in the Employee Benefits Office of the Human Resources Department, Skytop Office Building.

2.64 retirement age

Benefits associated with retirement are available to University employees who retire at age 55 or older. Contact the Employee Benefits Office of the Office of Human Resources, Skytop Office Building, concerning available retirement benefits.

2.65 appointment after retirement

At the request of a faculty member, the University may grant a temporary full- or part-time appointment after the date of retirement. Such appointments must be approved by the appropriate college or school committee which normally considers appointments and promotions. Such appointments will be made on a year-to-year basis and must also be approved by the appropriate academic dean of the academic unit.

2.66 emeritus(a) status

The title Emeritus or Emerita represents a signal honor that may be conferred upon retirement. Recommendations and supporting evidence of distinction and service to the University proceed through a process of faculty nomination; endorsement by the dean, the Vice Chancellor and Provost, and the Senate Committee on Appointments and Promotions; and approved by the Senate and the Board of Trustees. This title may accompany any rank. Emeritus/emeriti faculty members are continuing members of the University community and have a distinguished record of outstanding contribution to the University over a substantial number of years. Privileges exercised by emeritus/emeriti faculty include listings in University publications; using University libraries; participating in academic processions; receiving notices of all University events; receiving a University staff identification card and discount privileges at the University Bookstores; and participating in academic, professional, or social activities of the faculty and staff.

In special cases, the title Emeritus or Emerita may be conferred upon a person retiring from an academic administration position at Syracuse University. The designation may be added to the titles of Chancellor, Vice Chancellor and Provost, and academic dean at the time of retirement from the administrative position or at the time of retirement from the University when there has been a distinguished record of University contributions and an expectation of continued service to the University.

The title Emeritus/Emerita may be conferred posthumously, upon faculty recommendation, in those cases in which death precedes the possibility of retirement or within one academic year after retirement.

Approved by the University Senate March 2009
