Responsibilities

2.09 responsibilities

As teachers, members of a profession, and scholars committed to service, faculty members have great responsibilities and opportunities. Their influence is felt not only in the classroom and laboratory but in all their contacts with students, colleagues, and community. Some of the generally recognized responsibilities of faculty members are listed below.

2.10 faculty-student relations

The complete education of students is a basic purpose of a university. Syracuse University is aware of its responsibility for the academic, emotional, and physical welfare of all students. It is the philosophy of this University that a student's first responsibility is to the academic side of college life. In like manner, instructors' first obligations are to their classes and students. Guidance and counseling of students as well as cooperating with the deans of their colleges in academic counseling are duties of all instructors. Students are encouraged to go to their instructors for assistance even in matters not academic. As they work with students, faculty members may recognize difficulties and may be competent to help students directly or advise them where to go for assistance.

2.11 teaching

All faculty members are expected to perform their teaching duties fully and conscientiously. This includes preparing lectures, lesson assignments, reading lists, study materials, tests, and examinations; keeping and posting of regular office hours; making additional time available for special appointments; and promptly reporting all student grades.

Faculty members shall be on campus one week prior to the first day of classes and remain through commencement.

The University expects that all faculty members will be meticulous in meeting their academic assignments regularly and promptly. Faculty members shall meet and conclude classes on time. Classes meet for the full period, beginning the first day of each semester. If for some reason instructors cannot meet a class, they should notify their department chairperson promptly.

Classrooms are assigned by the Registrar's Office and necessary room changes must be approved by this office. Time and rooms for final examinations are assigned by the Registrar's Office, and faculty members must hold examinations at the time and in the room indicated. No changes are permitted without the authorization of the Registrar.

Faculty members have academic obligations to serve on committees, to counsel candidates for graduate degrees, to read theses, and to determine qualifications by means of examinations.

2.12 teaching loads

A normal teaching load is defined differently by the several departments and colleges. These different standards recognize the total campus responsibilities of faculty members, including teaching, research, counseling, and other academic activities; for example, normal classroom instructional work loads of faculty members engaged part-time on a sponsored research project will normally be lighter than that of colleagues without research activity.

2.13 scholarly and creative achievement

Faculty members' obligation to their own scholarly and creative achievement can be met in part by:

  • reading and studying to keep abreast of developments in their area;
  • studying methods and techniques to improve their own grasp of the material in their special field;
  • researching and investigating, reporting thereon, to increase the total fund of knowledge; and
  • actively participating and attending meetings of technical, learned, and professional organizations.

2.14 committee assignments and faculty meetings

Faculty members are expected to:

  • participate in departmental, college, and University committees;
  • attend departmental staff meetings and college faculty meetings regularly;
  • advise students as assigned by the college, school, or department;
  • attend commencement and other all-University functions.

2.15 cooperation and communication

Faculty members are expected to cooperate and consult with colleagues and students and to assist them in their pursuit of scholarly and research activities.

Faculty members shall keep their department chairperson or dean informed of their progress in research and writing. They are given the opportunity to do this systematically each year through the "Curriculum Vitae Update" form. It is proper for them to inform their chairperson or dean of their contributions to civic and professional groups and organizations.

When the discharge of professional responsibilities makes it desirable for faculty members to be away from the campus during any period of normal academic operation, they shall obtain prior approval of their department or program chairperson. Such advance notice will permit alternative arrangements to assure continuing coverage of all their campus responsibilities.

2.16 diffusion of knowledge

Faculty members should assist the University to achieve its charter obligation to further the "diffusion of knowledge" by serving as lecturers, consultants, or committee members in groups created to advance the public welfare or to serve the public good.

2.17 right to earn higher degrees

Faculty members who hold the rank of assistant professor or higher are not eligible to earn a master's or doctoral degree in their own departments.

2.18 tutoring by faculty members

Members of the teaching staff may not tutor students for pay except under conditions approved by the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
