Preface
The Faculty Manual brings together information on the objectives of Syracuse University and on the policies and rules governing the faculty, and on the duties and privileges of the faculty of Syracuse University. Modifications in policies subsequent to publication of this edition of The Faculty Manual take precedence. Policies are subject to change through normal procedures.
Members of the faculty are those individuals having the academic rank of professor, associate professor, assistant professor, instructor, or lecturer, who have been duly appointed by the dean or director of an academic unit with the concurrence of the Chancellor or Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, and whose primary duties are instruction and scholarly activity.
The Faculty Manual and its periodic corrections and additions are distributed to members of the faculty and administration. Copies may be obtained from the Office of the Senate Recorder. It is also available on-line on SyraCWIS.
A number of topics not fully covered in The Faculty Manual are treated in a variety of University publications and documents such as the Administrative Policy Manual; various publications of the Office of Human Resources; University, Senate, school, and college bylaws; statements of policy adopted by programs, departments, schools, and colleges.
Academic rules and regulations governing students can be found in the Syracuse University Bulletin: Academic Rules and Regulations. General University rules, and rules pertaining to student records, all of which apply to general student conduct and behavior can be found in the publication The Syracuse University Student Handbook, published by the Office of Student Programs and Student Government Association. This publication also lists activities, campus events, services, and cultural and recreational activities.
