The Office of Academic Affairs is responsible for defining and upholding the academic standards of Syracuse University, a task that is possible only with the active involvement of all faculty members. In order to achieve the high standards of academic excellence to which the University aspires, Academic Affairs recognizes the need for an ongoing partnership with all faculty members to ensure that the University provides outstanding educational opportunities for the entire University community.

Recognizing that the faculty is the intellectual and creative force that drives the University, the Office of Academic Affairs is committed to creating a supportive and enabling environment for all faculty members by providing a broad range of programs and services in support of faculty teaching, research and professional development.

Offices of the Associate Provosts: Kal Alston is the Associate Provost for Academic Administration and is responsible for faculty development services. You can reach her at kalston@syr.edu. Sandra Hurd is the Associate Provost responsible for academic programs and learning communities. Contact her at snhurd@syr.edu.

Faculty Manual: Brings together information about Syracuse University, the policies and rules governing the faculty, and the duties and privileges of the faculty. The Manual is available here on the Provost's website.

Office of Faculty Development: Sponsors events, provides resources, and offers consultation services in support of faculty professional development. The Office oversees a two-year program of events and activities for new faculty beginning with New Faculty Welcome each August. For more information, contact Bron Adam at beadam@syr.edu.

Office of Academic Human Resources: Facilitates faculty search & hiring processes, responds to faculty leave of absence requests (administrative, research, parental), and phased retirements. The Director Academic Human Resources conducts informal investigations and mediation sessions in response to faculty grievances or concerns. Contact Sonya Williams at sywillia@syr.edu.

Information Technology and Services (ITS): Provides a number of computing and information services for faculty, including instructional technology training, support, and services (Blackboard, e-Portfolio, digital image database); classroom technology systems; public computer labs; instructional technology consultation services; NetID, e-mail and calendaring services; and provides staffing for the ITS help desk (http://its.syr.edu, 443-2677, consult@syr.edu).

Office of Research: Ben Ware is Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School. The Graduate School administers graduate programs, scholarships, fellowships, and teaching assistantships in all areas except Law (http://gradsch.syr.edu).

The Office of Sponsored Programs: Assists University faculty with submission of proposals for external support of research, scholarship, education and training, and service/outreach activities (http://osp.syr.edu).

SU Libraries: Provide research and educational resources to the University community. The main library is E.S.. Bird Library, and other libraries include the Science and Technology Library and its three branches, Geology, Physics, and Math. In addition, there is the Architecture Reading Room and the Belfer Audio Library and Archive. (http://library.syr.edu).

Syracuse University Bookstore: Provides textbooks, general books, computers and software, and general merchandise to the University community. Faculty and staff receive a 10% discount on most purchases. (http://bookstore.syr.edu).
