Meet the Provost

Faculty - Emeritus

The title "Emeritus" or "Emerita" represents a signal honor that may be conferred upon retirement. Recommendations proceed to the trustees through the following channels:

  • faculty recommendation
  • departmental consideration and endorsement
  • college/school consideration and endorsement
  • faculty/committee/dean endorsement
  • Vice Chancellor & Provost endorsement
  • Senate Appointment and Promotions subcommittee endorsement
  • Senate approval
  • Board of Trustees approval
This Emeritus(a) title may accompany any rank. These faculty members are continuing members of the University community. Privileges exercised by the emeritus(a) shall include listings in University publications; using University libraries; participating in academic processions; receiving notices of all University events; receiving a University staff identification card and discount privileges at the University Bookstores; and participating in academic, professional, or social activities of the faculty and staff.

In special cases, the title Emeritus(a) may be conferred upon a person retiring from an administrative position at Syracuse University.  The designation may be added to the titles of University officers, academic officers, deans, and comparable positions at the time of retirement from the administrative position or at the time of retirement from the University.  Persons bearing the title Emeritus(a) are continuing members of the University community, and have a distinguished record of outstanding contribution to the University over a substantial number of years.

Nominations for academic administrators are submitted to the Senate Committee on Appointments and Promotions by the administrative unit of the person being nominated, along with supporting evidence that the person has a distinguished record of outstanding contribution to the University that spans a substantial period of time.  Note that there must be an expectation of continued service to the University.  The Committee on Appointment and Promotions recommends nominations to the Senate.  The nominations that are approved by the Senate, with the Chancellor's concurrence, are forwarded to the Board of Trustees for final approval.
