These faculty members are eligible for University benefits according to standard University policies.

Non-tenure Track Faculty:

They are intended to fill temporary vacancies in the faculty. These faculty members are eligible for University benefits according to standard University policies.

Visiting Faculty:
Faculty members on leave from another institution who receive a temporary appointment at Syracuse University. The University does not provide fringe benefits since visiting faculty are already covered at their home institutions.

Faculty Fellow:
Non-tenure track faculty members whose appointments are not intended to be renewed or to lead to a tenure decision. They are intended to bring the most promising new graduates of doctoral programs to Syracuse where they can pursue their research interests leading to the publication of a book or important set of articles, actively engage in interchange about their work and the work of others in the department, and contribute to the education of graduate and undergraduate students. These faculty members are eligible for University benefits according to standard University policies.

Appointment of Instructor on a tenure-track position, pending receipt of Ph.D.:
For those schools or colleges that use the instructor level for appointments of individuals expecting to complete their doctoral degree. These faculty members are eligible for University benefits according to standard University policies.

Research Faculty:
Non-tenure track faculty members whose appointment complements the research program of a department, school, or college. These appointments are not to replace regular faculty positions, nor should they be seen as creating long-term or career positions. Rather, they are intended to enrich the research environment of the university by providing formal appointments for scholars who provide their own support by serving as investigators on extra mural grants. Once research faculty members have been approved for grant funding and are receiving salary at a minimum of .625 FTE, they are eligible for University benefits according to standard University policy.

Regular Part-time Faculty: Faculty members who meet ALL of the following four criteria:

  • Explicitly appointed by a single academic unit to the category of regular part-time;
  • Appointment for a period of more than one academic year;
  • Teaching a minimum of 15 credit hours (.625 FTE) for the academic year;
  • Teaching a minimum of 6 credit hours (.50 FTE) each semester.

Regular part-time faculty members are entitled to some employment benefits including: health plan, life insurance, Accidental Death and Dismemberment, TIAA/CREF, and remitted tuition and dependent tuition benefits based on their percent of effort.

Senior Regular Part-time Faculty: Faculty members who meet ALL of the following criteria:

  • Explicitly appointed by a single academic unit to the category of senior regular part-time;
  • Appointment for a period of more than one academic year;
  • Teaching a minimum of 9 credit hours (.75 FTE) each semester.

Senior regular part-time faculty are entitled to some employment benefits including health plan, life insurance, Accidental Death and Dismemberment, TIAA/CREF, and tuition benefits based on their percent of effort (remitted tuition, dependent tuition, tuition exchange and cash grants).

Part-time Faculty: Appointments in this category are for assigned teaching duties at a specified pay rate with a duration of no more than one academic year, and are subject to renewal at the discretion of the university. No notice of non-renewal is required. (Instructor rank is used for those faculty members who have not attained the highest degree in their field, usually a Ph.D. Appointments above the level of instructor are based on credentials or when we are re-employing a former retired faculty member who had attained a higher rank.) Part-time faculty members are not eligible for University benefits, but they may obtain an identification card entitling them to use the library and athletic facilities, and to receive a discount on bookstore purchases. They may also purchase a parking permit. Human Resources has two basic categories for part-time faculty:

  • Temporary: These appointments are intended for those faculty who neither teach on a full-time basis at Syracuse University or elsewhere, nor meet the teaching load requirements of Regular Part-time faculty.
  • Adjunct: These appointments are offered to individuals who hold regular employment elsewhere and with whom the University has a special collegial relationship. They are eligible for occasional teaching assignments on an as-needed basis. And when a teaching assignment is made, the hiring academic unit will issue a part-time appointment letter stating the financial terms and other details of the appointment.
