Faculty members who are appointed at 1.00 full-time equivalent (FTE) for the academic year and who have achieved tenure at Syracuse University or who come with tenure from a different institution and now have an appointment at Syracuse University. These faculty members are eligible for University benefits according to standard University policies.
Full-time tenure-track faculty
Faculty members who are appointed at 1.00 FTE for the academic year with renewable appointments expected to lead to a tenure decision at the University. These faculty members are eligible for University benefits according to standard University policies.
Non-tenure track faculty
Faculty members intended to fill temporary vacancies in an academic unit for the semester or academic year and whose appointments are not intended to lead to tenure. These faculty members are eligible for University benefits according to standard University policies.
A special category of Non-tenure Track Faculty is the Professor of Practice who brings the latest developments in professional practice to the classroom and is expected to remain engaged with that profession while teaching, advising, and providing University service.
Faculty members on leave from another institution who receive temporary appointment at Syracuse University. The University does not provide fringe benefits since visiting faculty are already covered at their home institutions.
Faculty fellow and post-doc
Non-tenure track faculty members whose appointments are not intended to be renewed or to lead to a tenure decision. They are intended to bring the most promising new graduates of doctoral programs to Syracuse where they can pursue their research interests leading to the publication of a book or important set of articles, actively engage in interchange about their work and the work of others in the department, and contribute to the education of graduate and undergraduate students. These faculty members are eligible for University benefits according to standard University policies.
Non-tenure track faculty members whose appointment complements the research program of a department, school, or college. These appointments are not to replace regular faculty positions, nor should they be seen as creating long-term or career positions. Rather, they are intended to enrich the research environment of the university by providing formal appointments for scholars who provide their own support by serving as investigators on extra mural grants. Once research faculty members have been approved for grant funding and are receiving salary at a minimum of .625 FTE during the academic year, they are eligible for University benefits according to standard University policy.
Some part time faculty members are represented by the Adjuncts United bargaining unit. Part time faculty who have a multi-year appointment from a single academic unit and teach a minimum of 15 credit hours (.625 FTE) during the academic year but fewer than 24 credit hours per academic year are eligible for standard University benefits.
Eligible part time faculty who have appointments of one year or less and teach fewer than 24 credit hours per academic year (excluding summer sessions) are eligible for modified benefits after “qualifying,” as agreed upon by Adjuncts United and Syracuse University.
All part-time faculty members are eligible for an identification card, providing access to library, recreation, and athletic facilities, and a discount on bookstore purchases. They may also purchase a parking permit.
