Leaves Procedures

Please refer to the corresponding Syracuse University policy for specific information. The information below describes the procedures for each type of leave.

Research
A Research/Study Leave Application must be completed and signed by the faculty member. The research leave application must indicate the terms of the leave requested and whether external funding has been applied for. The length of the leave and the salary and benefit terms must be indicated by checking the appropriate box on the application. Two copies of the completed form, along with copies of the faculty member’s CV and a letter explaining the purpose of the leave should be submitted to the department chair or director with sufficient time for review and forwarding to the Office of Academic Affairs by the published deadline. See also Leave, Faculty Research and Administrative.

Administrative
An administrative leave application must be completed and signed by the faculty member. The application must indicate the length of the leave, the reason for the leave, and the salary and benefit provisions requested. Also, the completed application must indicate whether or not a tenure clock stoppage is requested. Two copies of the completed form, along with copies of the faculty member’s CV and a letter explaining the purpose of the leave, should be submitted to the department chair or director with sufficient time for review and forwarding to the Office of Academic Affairs by the published deadline. See also Leave, Faculty Research and Administrative.

Parental
The faculty member completes and signs a Faculty Parental Leave form and submits it to the department chair or the dean. The request should be made 5 months in advance of the expected birth or adoption date. (If this is not possible, the faculty member should notify the chair or dean as soon as s/he becomes aware of the arrival date.) The faculty member and the chair or dean meet to review the completed document and decide upon a mutually agreeable time-frame for the leave. The dean and chair sign the Faculty Parental Leave form, certifying the faculty member’s primary caregiver status and agreeing to the terms of the leave. The dean forwards the completed form to the Office of Academic Affairs for processing. See also Leave, Faculty Parental.
